As to marriage or celibacy, let a man take the course he will. He will be sure to repent.
socrates
The next time someone asks you, "Hey, howdja get to be a homosexual anyway?" tell them, "Homosexuals are chosen first on talent, then interview... then the swimsuit and evening gown competition pretty much gets rid of the rest of them. karen williams
The departing kiss [such as in an airport] is too often snatched away from us by strictures of het society. We cannot know the sweet melancholy and affectionate contemplation that it typically, even gloriously, evokes. Instead, if we are bold enough to plant one on our honey, we might know paranoia or fear. Alternately, we might know the firmness of our political convictions. A straight couple, after all, can kiss each other good-bye at an airport and it is seen by all (including themselves) as an expression of their love. But a gay couple does so, and it is seen by all (including us; it is unavoidable) as an expression of our politics, or at the very least, our subversion. After all, we are visibly undermining the status quo; we are proclaiming that we're here, we're queer, and all that. ken lovering
Why get married? For human beings, marriage is such an unnatural state. If you want monogamy, it has been said, you should marry a swan. quentin crisp, the art of celibacy
The results of more than a century of anthropological research on households, kinship relationships, and families, across cultures and through time, provide no support whatsoever for the view that either civilization or viable social orders depend upon marriage as an exclusively heterosexual institution. Rather, anthropological research supports the conclusion that a vast array of family types, including families built upon same-sex partnerships, can contribute to stable and humane societies. the american anthropological association, in response to george w. bush's call for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage as a threat to civilization
Bigamy is having one husband or wife too many. Monogamy is the same. oscar wilde
The violets in the mountains have broken the rocks. tennessee williams
The sun, each second, transforms 4 million tons of itself into light.... Human generosity is possible only because at the center of the solar system a magnificent stellar generosity pours forth free energy day and night without stop and without complaint and without the slightest hesitation. brian swimme
Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then. katherine hepburn
Before leaving the question of divorce, I should like to distinguish two things which are very often confused. The Christian conception of marriage is one; the other is the quite different question-- how far Christians, if they are voters or members of Parliament, ought to try to force their views of marriage on the rest of the community by embodying them in the divorce laws. A great many people seem to think that if you are a Christian yourself you should try to make divorce difficult for everyone. I do not think that. There ought to be two distinct kinds of marriage: one governed by the State with rules enforced on all citizens, the other governed by the Church with rules enforced by her on her own members. c.s. lewis, from mere christianity
I think people have the right to be married, certainly for taxes and everything. It's not something I want to do. I don't want to imitate a fairly corny heterosexual tradition. I'm not a fan of weddings of any kind. Going to them, I never have that much fun. I go to Provincetown every summer. Now it's going to be the "Niagara Falls" of gay weddings. However, for the people that want to do it, I'm for it. I think everyone that wants to be married should be able to. The "sanctity" of heterosexual marriage? When you can get divorced ten times? When Britney Spears can get married for one day? I don't believe in that either. So I'm certainly for the right of it and I think it should be legal. john waters
"Gay Marriage" won't lead to "dog marriage". It is not a slippery slope to rampant interspecies coupling. When women got the right to vote, it didn't lead to hamsters voting. No court has extended the equal protection clause to salmon. And for the record, all marriages are same-sex marriages. You get married, and every night, it's the same sex. bill maher
